Granger Smith has suffered the worst kind of personal tragedy.
The country music artist shared the “unthinkable” news on Twitter and Instagram Thursday afternoon, revealing to the public that his and wife Amber’s three-year-old son, River Kelly, has passed away.
Smith explained to his followers that River died as the result of a "tragic accident” where “despite doctor’s best efforts, he was unable to be revived.”
Wrote Smith in full:
I have to deliver unthinkable news. We’ve lost our youngest son, River Kelly Smith. Following a tragic accident, and despite doctor’s best efforts, he was unable to be revived.
Amber and I made the decision to say our last goodbyes and donate his organs so that other children will be given a second chance at life.
Our family is devastated and heartbroken, but we take solace in knowing he is with his Heavenly Father.
We truly cannot imagine what Smith and his loved ones must be going through.
“Riv was special,” the singer continued. “Everyone that met him knew that immediately. The joy he brought to our lives cannot be expressed and his light will be forever in our hearts.”
Concluded the singer:
“If there are words to say more, I cannot find them in this moment. Love the ones close to you. There has never been a more difficult moment for us than this.”
Smith has released nine studio albums, one live album and one EP.
He won the BMI Country Award for "Backroad Song" in 2016 and was nominated for Best New Country Artist a year later at the iHeartRadio Music Awards.
Alongside a selfie with her son, Amber shared the same heartbreaking caption as the one her husband wrote above, beginning it as follows:
“Nothing can prepare a mother to deliver this kind of news.”
She added at the end of this emotional message:
In lieu of flowers or gifts, please send donations to Dell Children’s Medical Center in River’s name. The doctors, nurses and staff have been incredible.
There are no further details at the moment regarding exactly what happened to River. We simply know that the accident took place on June 5 and that a 911 call was placed from the Smith's home in Texas.
(UPDATE: Sources have confirmed that the three-year old drowned.)
In the wake of this awful news, country singers showed the couple their support as best they could.
“I’m here for you if you need anything at all bro just hit me up,” Kane Brown wrote, while Maren Morris added:
“I am so, so sorry. Thinking of you and your family at this time."
The couple, who got married in 2010, welcomed their daughter, London, one year later.
She became a big sister when Lincoln was born in 2014; and then River arrived two years later.
What a true and terrible tragedy.
We send our condolences to Granger Smith, his wife and all who knew their son well. May he rest in peace.
