Late last month, Grammy-nominated rapper Nipsey Hussle was shot dead, murdered outside of an L.A. clothing boutique that he owned.
Within days, police identified a suspect in the cold-blooded killing.
Now, that suspect has secured an extremely famous attorney -- and entered a plea.
29-year-old Eric Holder was named as the suspect in Nipsey Hussle's murder earlier this week.
On Thursday, he appeared in court to enter his plea.
Holder was charged with one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon.
If convicted, he could face a life sentence behind bars.
Holder pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Notably, Holder has secured some extremely solid -- and famous -- legal representation.
Chris Darden is acting as his defense attorney.
If you think that the name sounds familiar, you're right -- he rose to fame as one of the prosecutors in the O.J. Simpson trial.
(It is not uncommon for prosecutors to eventually become either politicians or defense attorneys -- ideals are great, but you also want to get paid)
According to authorities, Holder and Hussle knew each other.
Holder was a gang member and also an aspiring rapper.
Investigators say that the two men had a number of conversations outside of Hussle's store on Sunday.
Holder is said to have departed, only to return -- with a handgun.
There, he allegedly shot Hussle, dealing lethal gunshot injuries to his torso and head.
He is also accused of having wounded the two men who were with Hussle.
Nipsey Hussle did not die immediately, despite the severity of his wounds.
After taking multiple rounds of gunfire, Hussle was able to call his brother, Samiel.
Samiel has recalled racing to the scene to find his brother in the center of the carnage.
He arrived even before paramedics.
According to Samiel, his brother was still breathing when he arrived.
He hoped at the time that this meant that he would pull through, and desperately performed CPR until the paramedics arrived.
It seems that he was not aware of the extent of the injuries.
Only when paramedics lifted Samiel into the ambulance did he see the gunshot wound in the back of his younger brother's head.
Hussle was declared dead at the hospital.
The manhunt for Eric Holder went on for two days before he was arrested by the LAPD.
Hussle is being widely mourned by many fans, and not merely for the loss of his music.
The clothing boutique in front of which he was murdered? He created that store and employed felons.
Notably, felons are often discriminated against by potential employers. This was Hussle's way of giving them a second chance.
Hussle had devoted a great deal of time and resources into giving back to his community.
Hussle, born Ermias Asghedom, had enjoyed success for about a decade within the hip hop community, and recently rose to even greater fame.
We do not yet know all of the details behind Holder's alleged motive, but investigators say that this was a personal dispute.
Notably, investigators initially believed that his murder could have been gang-related.
(Some gangs do not like when someone starts hiring their members and putting them on the straight-and-narrow)
It is unclear what arguments the defense will put forward, and what further evidence the prosecution will present at trial.
If Chris Darden is representing Holder, his legal history and experience as a Deputy District Attorney could make this a real challenge in court.
