Lady Gaga Writes Op-Ed, Supports Sexual Assault Policy

With the recent unfolding of the Josh Duggar scandal, the celebrity world has been chatting A LOT lately about sexual assault.

For instance, Ryan Reynolds made a comment about the Duggars on his Facebook page.  Even Whoopi Goldberg addressed the case, saying he should leave God out of it.

But Lady Gaga is going a step further and moving past the Duggar case to address problems with sexual assault at college campuses.

The 29-year-singer has teamed up with New York’s Governor Andrew Cuomo to pen an op-ed piece for Billboard, highlighting the need for sexual assault legislation on college campuses.

“By passing legislation such as the bill currently before the New York State legislature, we can turn the tide on this issue so that students can realize their dreams on campuses that are safe spaces,” Gaga and Cuomo state.

“That’s why we are joining together to take a stand against sexual assault on college campuses. Quite simply, enough is enough.”

Gaga and Cuomo have just over a week for the words to hit home.  The New York state lawmakers’ session ends June 17.

The legislation was introduced in February to apply to all of New York’s campuses, including private universities. Cuomo also launched the Enough Is Enough campaign in support of the bill.

This is personal for Gaga. In December 2014, Lady Gaga revealed in an interview with Howard Stern that she was a victim of sexual assault.

Gaga was 19-years-old when a producer, 20 years her senior, raped her.

Her song “Swine” from the album ARTPOP was inspired by the sexual assault.

Cuomo has begun screening Hunting Ground, a documentary about the sexual-assault epidemic on campuses. The film was written and directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Kirby Dick.  The film features a new Gaga song—“Till it Happens to You.”
