The truth was out there for all to react to on Gotham Season 1 Episode 7: Oswald Cobblepot is alive and well.
This means James Gordon has to die, right?
Yes, according to Harvey Bullock even, who pulled a gun on his partner early on because he figured both were dead men otherwise.
But Gordon was able to convince Bullock to fight along his side instead, helping him execute a plan that included simply arresting Falcone and the Mayor.
This scheme ran into a slight hiccup, however, after they arrived at Falcone’s mansion to bring him in. The mob boss said he had Barbara hostage, something Gordon didn’t initially believe because he had told his fiancee to skip town for a bit.
However, Falcone said she had come back to plead for Gordon’s life, though he wouldn’t show Gordon the proof he desired. Gordon would need to trust that he enemy was many things… but a liar wasn’t one of them.
And trust Gordon did, placing his weapon down and telling Bullock to do the same. With those gestures, Falcone DID produce Barbara – and he was actually impressed by Gordon in the process. He saw this trust as an important first step.
And he let Gordon live as a result.
But he also let Gordon live for another reason: to close the episode, Penguin actually visited Falcone. And the show flashed back to a scene omitted from Gotham Season 1 Episode 1, with Penguin telling Falcone to order Gordon to kill him. Why?
Because Penguin knew Gordon wouldn’t do so. He would then disappear and return under a new identity and go work for Maroni… while serving as a mole for Falcone.
This is exactly what went down and it included Penguin telling Falcone about Fish and Nikolai’s plans for a coup.
Falcone was pleased with their arrangement, especially because Nikolai was killed as part of a Maroni raid that Penguin helped organize, taking any suspicion away from Falcone for the deed.
But this lead gangster wasn’t sure about Gordon. He told Penguin that Gordon still may need to die in the final scene of the episode.
