There was a famine and there was a coronation ceremony on Reign Season 2 Episode 3.

Yup. Life, death and a party? Sounds like the makings of a perfect hour of CW television, doesn’t it?

We opened with Mary and Francis learning all about the coronation events on tap, though they weren’t really in the mood to celebrate, not with leaders from 50 nations coming to their castle during a time of famine and debt.

Kenna and Lola met some noble wives who rambled on about the new chateau that Lola and her child are receiving while Kenna stood in the background, seething.

Evidently, Kenna and Bash’s house was destroyed in the plague fires – and being the deputy doesn’t provide Bash with land when there’s none to be given.

But a woman does come to Bash saying that Lord Barnard killer he husband, which prompts Bash to investigate. It also prompts the Lord to try and bribe Lola with land.

The dude is clearly a murderer and Bash and Kenna must watch their backs around nobles going forward.

Back to Lola: she’s wondering why Francis fired Caroline and all he can say is that “she reminded me of someone,” which is most definitely sort of true.

Later, Francis finds Caroline and takes her to a medium of sorts, where King Henry’s eyebrow makes another appearance. This Caroline-Henry combination alleges that his son was plotting against him prior to his death.

Back at the castle, a German Duke approaches Mary at one of the festivities and tells her how he’d be willing to trade grain for the release of Protestant prisoners, the ones Henry had tortured for the way they worshiped. Mary sees this as an opportunity to feed her people without Narcisse’s assistance.

She presents the offer to Francis. He worries about a Protesant-Catholic feud, but Mary goes behind his back and agrees to the deal anyway.

But where ARE the German prisoners? Not where they were supposed to be, according to the Duke. Mary chats with a couple guards who admit they got distracted (by a whore) and Mary recalls seeing Conde with this same woman. She confronts him about stealing the prisoners.

He explains that his lover’s ship was taken by the Germans on its way to Amsterdam… and he wants to use the prisoners to barter with the Germans for his love’s release. Naturally.

Eventually, Mary and Francis do get the German grain and then they get Narcisee’s grain after telling him of their victory.

Francis gives Mary mad props for how this all worked out.

In the end, Narcisse makes it clear to Catherine that he wants something, while Mary and Francis get crowned and go have some royal sex.
