Yoselyn Ortega, a New York City nanny, is charged with killing the two young children in her care.
According to the New York Times, Ortega, 50, was able to speak with police Saturday from her bed at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center.
They delayed charging her because she was being intubated and treated for self-inflicted wounds after stabbing herself in the throat and cutting her wrists.
Yoselyn Ortega faces two counts of first-degree murder.
A police spokesperson declined to share more information about Ortega's motive or her health and when she is expected to be released from the hospital.
She currently remains hospitalized, under police guard.
Ortega's relatives say that she had sought help from a mental health professional before the alleged murders. They also said she had financial problems.
On October 25, Marina Krim came home from a swimming lesson with her young daughter to find two of her children, Lucia, 6, and Leo, 2, dead in the bathtub.
Both apparently suffered knife wounds. According to police at the time, as Krim walked into the bathroom, she saw Ortega stab herself in the throat.
