Jonah Shacknai Speaks (Briefly) on Mansion Deaths

For the first time, San Diego pharmaceutical CEO Jonah Shacknai spoke out about the death of Rebecca Nalepa, his girlfriend, and the death of his son Max.

Both died within days of each other following strange, unrelated incidents at the famed Coronado, Calif., mansion he owns. Investigations are ongoing.

Shacknai, the CEO of Medicis Pharmaceutical Corp., opened a conference call Monday to discuss earnings by offering a "personal note of appreciation."

He thanked all those who have "provided me with wonderful encouragement."

"We have undertaken some tragedies ... some losses, that one couldn't imagine experiencing in a lifetime," the business executive said.

Shacknai did not discuss in detail the deaths last month of son Max, 6, in an apparent fall down a staircase, or Nalepa (also known as Rebecca Zahau), whose body was found hanging with her hands and feet bound.

But the CEO, who has two other children from a previous marriage, sought to reassure investors that his mind will be on business.

"At this time, I have been with my kids, waiting for school to begin," he said. "I expect very quickly to return to the normal work schedule at the office."

Shacknai is not a suspect in either mysterious death.
