R&B superstar Brandy may not have escaped justice yet.

Following her recent involvement in a fatal car crash, the California Highway Patrol recommended that the singer/actress be charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter, the Associated Press reports.

This could mean up to one year in jail and thousands in fines. Unless she does the smart thing and gives Pete Doherty‘s legal team a retainer this minute, in which case she’ll probably get community service.

“The city attorney’s office is currently reviewing the case to determine whether the evidence warrants the filing of a misdemeanor charge of vehicular manslaughter,” CHP spokesman Nick Velasquez said.

The accident occurred on December 30, 2006 as Brandy drove her Land Rover into the back of a Honda driven by Awatef Aboudihaj, whose car hit another vehicle before ending up on the median where she was struck by someone else. She later died of her injuries.

Brandy is not suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

A message seeking comment from Brandy’s publicist, Courtney Barnes, was not immediately returned. Lauren Conrad reportedly decided to buckle her seat belt after reading this story, though, so that’s good. Click it or ticket, babe.
