The teaser trailer for Godzilla has just been released and fans’ first look at one of the most anticipated motion pictures of 2014 certainly doesn’t disappoint.

The trailer shows a city under attack by the titular, dinosaur-like creature, with members of the military scrambling to respond to the beast and its antics.

There’s even one frightening glimpse at the enormous creature itself:

Gareth Edwards’ take on the classic story/behemoth strives to be different, darker, bigger, and scarier, he ambitiously teased at this year’s Comic-Con.

"There’s nothing sci-fi, it’s very grounded and realistic," he said. "I’ve never worked this long and this hard on something that lasted just a few seconds since I lost my virginity."

Well played.

The Godzilla cast includes Elizabeth Olsen, Breaking Bad‘s Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Juliette Binoche and Sally Hawkins.

Godzilla is due to hit theaters on May 16, 2014, pretty close to another large-scale sci-fi project. Check out this morning’s Jupiter Ascending trailer!
