Charlie Askew Butchers American Idol Performance, Breaks Down on Stage
by Hilton Hater at . Updated at .Poor Charlie Askew.
The American Idol hopeful auditioned live for the first time tonight, choosing the track "Mama" by Genesis. Which is about a prostitute.
But things got even weirder from there: Askew donned a ponytail. And a grungy shirt. And screeched throughout the performance, drawing outright laughter from the judges.
"What happened?" Nicki Minaj asked. "I don’t want to see your arms. I don’t want you working out. I don’t want to see that ponytail. I don't want to see that earring. Lose the mustache immediately. I feel like someone stole my kid. I want my cute, cuddly Charlie back!"
After hearing harsh critiques from the panel, Askew broke down alongside Ryan Seacrest.
“All I can say is, I needed to vent a little bit," Charlie said when asked about the audition. "A lot of people think I’m a very happy boy, and the only reason I smile so much is because I feel like I have to."
Wow. Sad, profound stuff.
Seacrest handled the situation like a pro, telling Askew: “You’ve got some friends here. We appreciate your courage and your honesty, and there’s nothing easy about having those feelings inside and standing up here and having to do that tonight.”
And now the vote is in your hands, America: Will Askew advance to the Top 10? Or will this be the end of the road for a seemingly troubled young man? We'll find out tomorrow night.

I just watched this performance, and was blown away. His performance was amazing and real. American Idol is fake.
Look, the title of this article is nonsense. In no way did Charlie "butcher" his performance. If anything, it was one of the most awesome, artistic, and immense performances on Idol. It is clear from reading the comments here and the way the judges reacted that this show is about pop, and absolutely not rock and roll. If these soul, rap, country, and R&B people had any sort of knowledge of rock and roll, oh hell music in general, they would have stood up and applauded.
Loved Charlies' performance. I was really bored with the other performers. I think Mariah Carey is a class act. No need to comment on the other three judges. Charlie is so young and has a lot of talent. He marches to his own drum. With love and support he will find his way.
Randy and Nicki, you two are bad excuses for judges. You two made Charlie upset. And after what he said because he was humiliated by you, I wanted to kick you two's no good, worthless asses. Nicki, you had no right to tell Charlie what you don't want to see him doing. He's not a baby, he's a grown teenager. You can't tell him what he should do. And Randy, I know you think you are "a good judge" but you're not, because you're calling his performance 'horrible', when it obviously was one of the most amazing performances of the night. I'm disappointed in both of you, even though I should have expected that crap in the first place.
Shey's, I agree with you..Niki and Randy got it wrong...That's so they could get in fat boy(wierd expression boy) from St. Louis and Urkel from the deep south.
He was fantastic (singing wise), anyone who knows real music can see that. But of course when you have terrible judges who only rate shitty mainstream pop music, this is what happens.
You MUST be kidding! I feel sorry for him, but holy crap he SUCKS! I am not sure what anyone could find enjoyable about his performance. And the judges did nothing wrong...they critiqued him honestly. And I think they were spot on!
Seriously, ARE YOU DELUTIONAL???? This kid SUCKS big time. America got it right, & so did the judges, this kid CANNOT SING, & the judges were just being honest, Besides he acted like a 12 year old. He's not acting like a grown teen by no means. WOW get a reality check...
He has personal issues within himself that have cost him a place as a top 10 finalist. His outward appearance& his stage presentation show that he has serious problems that he could not mask for the public. The public is only interested in the actual performances definitely not the problems of the one on stage.
