Has the next big name in American tennis finally arrived?
Sloane Stephens shocked Serena Williams yesterday with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory, moving on to the semifinals of the Australian Open and leaving a visibly frustrated Selena slamming her racket and holding an aching back.
Stephens, 19, tried to keep her composure after the match, simply telling reporters: "To be in the semis of a Grand Slam is definitely I say a good accomplishment. A lot of hard work."
And she knocked off the very best to get there, handing Williams her first loss since August 17. To close out 2012, she won Wimbledon, the London Olympics, the U.S. Open and the WTA Championship.
Stephens has admitted she had a photo of Serena in her room when she was a kid, but that may need to change.
"This is so crazy. Oh my goodness," Sloane said, wiping away tears in her post-match TV interview. "I think I'll put a poster of myself (up) now."
