Madonna and Lady Gaga are no strangers to making thinly-veiled (and not-at-all-veiled) references to each other. The former contributed another last week.

At her MDNA concert stop in St. Paul, Minn., Her Madgesty told the crowd that Mother Monster refused her recent offer to perform on stage together.

"I have the best fans in the whole world. So take that, Lady Gaga!" she exclaimed.

"You know, I invited her onstage to sing with me, but she turned me down. It’s okay. I’ve been rejected before. It’s a good thing to build character."

In September, Madonna announced in Atlantic City, N.J., "I’m going to dedicate this next song to Lady Gaga," before performing her song "Masterpiece."

"You wanna know something? I love her. I do love her. Imitation is the highest form of flattery. But one day, very soon, we’re going to be on stage together. Just you wait."

We will, without holding our breath.
