The VMAs are never without controversy, and Sunday night's ceremony was no exception.
But amidst all the questions about whether the Miley Cyrus-Nicki Minaj beef was staged and jokes about Kanye West running for president, a debate that transcended the celebrity world exploded on Twitter.
Rebel Wilson took the stage dressed as a cop and began to address the timely issue of police brutality in the US.
She then tore the uniform off to reveal a t-shirt reading, "F--k the stripper police" and launched into a bit about strippers who perform in cop costumes.
The crowd on hand seemed to love it, but many on Twitter demanded an apology for what they believe was an insensitive an ill-timed joke at the expense of the victims of police brutality.
"Nicki's energy would've been better spent calling out Rebel Wilson's unacceptable police brutality jabs than wasting words on Miley," wrote one Twitter user.
"Rebel Wilson's got her nerve presenting Best Hip-Hop Video while making a joke out of police/state violence," wrote another.
The joke was particularly surprising as Wilson recently spoke out in favor of gun control and described herself as a crusader against violence.
