Miley Cyrus did more at the 2019 VMAs than pile on the PDA with Kaitlynn Carter. Though yes, she very much did that.
She performed her new, emotional single.
She did a great job, but it doesn't exactly take a fine-toothed comb to see some clear nods to Liam Hemsworth and an explanation for their divorce.
Miley Cyrus performed "Slide Away" at the annual VMAs on Monday night.
Her voice was as powerful and evocative as ever and she looked gorgeous while she sang.
But millions of people are now pouring over the lyrics to this breakup anthem and wondering just how much she's revealing about Liam.
"Once upon a time, it was paradise/Once upon a time, I was paralyzed," Miley sings.
"Think I'm gonna miss these harbor lights/But it's time to let it go," her lyrics continue.
She seems to make direct reference to having grown out of or moved past her relationship with her (still legal) husband.
"Once upon a time, it was made for us/Woke up one day, it had turned to dust," Miley mourns.
It's very much a goodbye song at first.
"Baby, we were found, but now we're lost/So it's time to let it go," she sings.
Later, though, lyrics get more specific -- and it really looks like she may be pointing the finger at Liam for causing the divorce.
Miley then seems to refer to the couple's home in Malibu ... and to something else.
"I want my house in the hills/Don't want the whiskey and pills," Miley sings.
She then admits: "I don't give up easily/But I don't think I'm down."
Now, there had been reports saying that Liam's drinking and even alleged drug use was partially to blame for their separation.
Maybe Miley is confirming that ... or perhaps someone saw the lyrics and jumped to that conclusion and became a "source" for a report.
It's hard to tell when it comes to parsing lyrics.
"Move on, we're not 17/I'm not who I used to be," Miley sings.
Here, she is clearly referring to her age when their relationship began.
Now here is where Miley seems to directly shade Liam.
But that's not what she sang at the VMAs.
On stage, Miley sang: "You're right, I'm grown now."
Miley has shot down claims that she cheated on Liam and, until this song, refused to explain exactly why they split.
"But the truth is, once Liam & I reconciled, I meant it, & I was committed," Miley affirmed in a recent Instagram post.
She insisted: "There are NO secrets to uncover here."
"I’ve learned from every experience in my life," Miley pointed out. "I’m not perfect, I don’t want to be, it’s boring."
"I’ve grown up in front of you," she acknowledged. "But the bottom line is, I HAVE GROWN UP."
What do you think -- is she blaming the split on Liam or just furnishing her song with some details?
