Game of Thrones Reveals Season 8 Premiere Date, Drops Awesome Trailer

by at .

Prior to Sunday night's True Detective Season 3 premiere (Ed note: Much better than Season 2 thus far, but the same could be said of watching paint dry while undergoing a root canal.), HBO surprised fans with a very different type of brooding drama.

At this point, the final season of Game of Thrones is basically like winter in Westeros -- it's been coming for as long as anyone can remember, but it often seems like it'll never get here.

But thank the old gods and the new, we finally have a release date -- April 14 -- for the last six episodes of arguably the most obsessed-over series in television history.

Not only that, HBO has taken pity upon the peasants by tossing us a dramatic teaser that's ratcheted fan anticipation up to new heights.

The trailer is less than 2 minutes long, but it effectively sets the stage for the conflicts that will likely dominate the show's final installments (several of which are said to be feature-film length).

Basically, it's the Starks (with some help from the Khaleesi/Tyrion alliance) against the baddies (the White Walkers, the other Lannisters).

Our guess is that it'll be Jon and company's mission to put Daenerys on the Iron Throne (which will likely make the Starks a royal family now that he and Dany are incestuously boning).

Of course, it's possible that all of the political intrigue will be rendered moot by the creeping invasion of the walking dead.

The trailer effectively hints at what's to come, while at the same time taking us back to where it all began -- Winterfell, and the Stark crypt that preserves the family's history.

Over the course of the past seven seasons, the show took us all over Westeros and introduced approximately 43 bajillion characters.

But through it all, it never lost touch with the foundation of the story -- the Stark family, its history, and its role in shaping the future of Westeros.

Now, if you'll excuse us, we'll be counting the days between now and April 14.
