In the early days of reality television, a large part of the appeal was that viewers could identify with the stars on their screen.
These days, however, cast members on hit reality shows share very little in common with their viewers.
Take Jenelle Evans, for example.
Sure, you might have a friend with an arrest record a mile long, three kids by three different baby daddies, and an overly-chummy relationship with illicit substances, but that friend probably isn't gainfully employed.
And if she is, she almost certainly doesn't talk to bosses the way Jenelle does.
Fans were floored to see Evans berate Teen Mom 2 producers during Monday night's episode, and many think her outburst may be the result of a full-blown meltdown.
Take a look:
Jenelle didn't appear in this week's episode of TM2 for very long. But during her short time on screen, she made quite an impression.
Jenelle's screen time has been slashed dramatically this season, primarily as a result of her husband, David Eason, being fired from the show.
Making It Worse
Producers never planned to punish Jenelle for the homophobic tirade that got David fired, but her role on the show wound up being reduced due to Eason's actions.
There have been reports of David "menacing" the cast and Jenelle refusing to film without her husband.
Of course, she hasn't made good on that threat, as doing so would mean walking away from a six-figure salary and the only job she's ever had.
And so, Jenelle continues to film -- but far less often than she used to, and with Barbara Evans taking David's place as the sounding board for Evans' many complaints.
Blink and You'll Miss Her
Jenelle only appeared in one of the show's segments last night.
Babs' Time to Shine
An additional segment featured her mother, who made it clear that she's just as confused by her daughter's situation as everyone else.
Asked by one of the show's producers if Jenelle plans to continue filming, Barbara confessed that she doesn't know.
Making It Work
Executive producer Kristen was surprisingly understanding about the situation -- but it's clear that she wants answers.
Yeah, What a Tough Life
"It's very hard for her to film her life when her husband is not included, so everything she does with her family, with her husband, he can't be filmed, so she said, 'How can I film when David was fired from the show?'" Barb explained.
Jenelle's Idea of Stress
"She said they don't understand how stressful it is," Babs said of Jenelle's strained relationship with producers, adding that Jenelle is "annoyed cameras can't be around when David is."
Later, when she deigned to appear on the show that made her famous, Jenelle was asked by Kristen, "How difficult is it for you to do a show about your life when we can't film your family?"
"This show keeps giving me a bad rap, so I want some f--king respect, dude. I was some f--king respect," Evans responded.
"Even if I'm never on TV again, that's fine, I have other shit I'm working on, so I'm fine with that," she continued. "Once you push me away, everyone should know, I don't trust you again."
"I feel like they never believe me and everything I say to them is a lie and everything they read online, that's what they believe," Evans explained.
Her ... Favorite Food?
"And they don't know anything about me, they don't know what I do, how I act, they don't even know my favorite food anymore, they don't know what's going on with me mentally, physically, my health issues, unless I share it, unless I open my mouth," Jenelle rambled on.
Is She Serious?
"Because I realized I don't need MTV, I need myself. I'm the only one that's important here, this show is not important," she continued.
Now She's Just Trolling ... Right?
"Me, myself as a person, everyone likes me, they don't like the Jenelle they see on TV that's always mad, always angry, always yelling around her kids. They don't see the real me," Evans added.
All About Dave
Of course, it wasn't long before Jenelle slipped up and revealed she's really just pissed that her husband got fired.
"I finally have someone that supports me and I can't bring them?" she went on. "You guys shut me out from everything. Fine, you're against me? Stay the f--k away from me because I'm done."
Good Luck With That
"I would like for them to show me more in a positive light," she added, "because I'm finally getting along with my mom and she's getting along with my family."
We Can Only Hope
Jenelle went on to reveal that the current season of TM2 will "probably" be her "last." Don't let the door hit ya on the way out!
