You know how Jan Brady always shouted “MARSHA MARSHA MARSHA”? That’s what Caroline (and everyone else) should be doing. Except it’s “ELENA ELENA ELENA!”

As we saw on The Vampire Diaries Season 6 Episode 3, she’s successfully forgotten she was ever in love with Damon, and now her love has been replaced with straight-up hate. (Which, hey, thin line and all…)

But this compulsion is having super unfair consequences for her friends.

Elena has the bright idea to get everyone together down at the “swimming hole” for a little summer fun. She brings along Liam (Cutebrag) to introduce him to Caroline because she’s obviously certain that what Caroline needs isn’t her best friends and to be able to return to her home.

It’s a man. That’s the answer to Caroline’s ills.

Elena, meanwhile, can’t remember that she was in love with Damon for the better part of the last two years. She also seems to remember her breakup with Stefan as being a very amicable one.

She’s also totally okay with the fact that she herself has dated no one since breaking up with Stefan for reasons she can’t really remember. (But doesn’t know she can’t remember.)

The trouble with all of this is that absolutely EVERYONE ELSE remembers EVERYTHING! And they’re all just supposed to go on pretending that Elena’s version of events is the correct one.

How dumb and unfair is this?

In a word, very.

Elena wants to swing on ropes into the water and take Jello shots in the woods and be a carefree college student who gets kissed by mysterious boys at parties and all of her friends are like “peace out.” Did neither she nor Alaric think about what they were asking everyone else to do before they compelled her? Or did they just not care?

How is Elena Gilbert so freaking selfish!?!

Damon, meanwhile, wants only one thing when he finally returns home: To tell Elena he loves her. Awwwwwwww heartmelt!

(And kill Bonnie, but we all know that’s not really going to happen.)

The inevitable getting those two back together storyline is going to be long. And it’s probably going to cause some serious conflict for Alaric and Damon, who haven’t been able to break open a bottle of bourbon together in quite a while on account of Alaric being dead and then Damon being…whatever…and now Damon’s going to hate Alaric and drama drama drama all because of Elena.

And yet, I keep watching because I’m invested in these characters and their lives, as lame as that sounds.

I want to know that Enzo is going to live and how. I want to know that Stefan is going to go back to wearing his Hero Hair and trying to save his brother. I want Caroline to be the winner.

And I want to know more about Kai. Guess I’ll have to watch The Vampire Diaries online for that one.
