Just as Billboard announces it’s looking to expand into Nashville with a Billboard Country Music Awards, the unconfirmed gossip mill spits out this rumor to us: Fox is dropping the regular Billboard Awards.

After 17 years of broadcasting the awards show, a source with knowledge of the network’s decision making claims Fox is terminating their arrangement after 2006’s show posted the worst numbers ever: 6.1 million viewers, or a 2.7/7 share. Blame is on the Britney-Paris fiasco or the fact that the awards show market is blatantly supersaturated (Big in ‘06, anyone?).

VNU’s Billboard is “trying desperately to salvage the situation by proposing a more limited country awards show,” we’re told. “Fox is reportedly mulling the idea over, but television is already thick with country music award shows,” like the Country Music Awards.

No firm decision has been made whether or not to drop the broadcast, but “Fox is expected to announce shortly what it plans to do.” May we suggest … creating a MySpace profile?

I totally forgot that Billboard even has an awards show. It never has ANY buzz. No big loss to Fox, I’m sure.

Billboard awards, R.I.P.

More horrendous news about VNU/Nielsen Media Co.’s flagging business.

Kilcullen is a sleazeball who was previously sued by 2 female ex-employees in California for sexual assault. His company then bailed him out back then too, settling those claims with the two women. Unbelievable that an incompetent skeezeball like Kilcullen has so many lives.

It’s all true, true, true — JK has a knack for finding publishers who will pay millions to keep their golden boy out of jail — and then promoting him! First IDG, then VNU — will he have to shoot somebody in Times Square at noon before somebody will throw their hands up on this jerk? What a mystery!

Btw, a recent New York Times piece challenged Kilcullen’s claim that he “founded” the Books-for-Dummies franchise.

What a douchebag.

What? A Billboard Country Awards Show? Shhhhhhh… Don’t tell anyone that Billboard laid off its long-time country music reporter, and cut their Nashville staff to the bone. Sounds like they are really committed to country music… Now that they are in a jam, I guess anything goes…
