Maybe with all the connections in the free world, publishing is a lucrative venture. At least that???s what Jack Ford, Gerald???s son, is hoping.

The former first kid and part of the founding staff of Outside magazine is launching a new media project, Mountain Time Publishing. The company will run a bi-weekly lifestyle magazine insert for 20 small daily newspapers in ski resort towns. The inserts will start before Christmas.

After a childhood of press conferences, apparently publishing is the ultimate follow-up career. Too bad we’ll have to wait at least eight years for Chelsea’s tell-all.

Holy crap, Don Welsh is launching another magazine. The seasoned publisher, notorious for launching magazines for the sole purpose of selling them off (and a regular lunch partner of Keith Kelly), is working on a quarterly publication called Outside’s Go.

Welsh is teaming up with Larry Burke with investment backing by Mariah Media to launch the Outside spin-off (Welsh launched Outside 25 years ago) geared towards men in “35-plus” age bracket. Welsh’s last personal adventure was Budget Living, which he launched with editor Sarah Gray Miller in fall of 2002 and folded in early 2006. For Outside Go, Welsh will pull Kent Black — “an adventurer and lifestyle writer” who has also apparently “appeared” in mags like Outside, Rolling Stone, and Men’s Journal.

Both think this new venture will be a grand slam.

“It’s not the super rich,” said Welsh during a recent interview at Michael’s Restaurant. “It’s guys who have worked hard and have a few bucks to spend on themselves.”

A “grand slam?” We hope they plan to appeal to some of the over 55 crowd, too. Oh, we’re just kidding — we love to see a mag launch in these turbulent times. Especially one that will definitely be on the block in three to five years.
