As it turns out on NCIS Season 12 Episode 5, McGee is not quite the leader we expect for a group of Navy murder-solvers. His lack of confidence is pretty obvious and uncomfortable.

So, McGee as leader is basically Gibbs 2.0, which is great if what we want is Gibbs as a leader, but not so great if we want McGee to come into his own.

He seemed a little too happy to play Gibbs and not quite happy enough to figure things out for himself. Step up, McGee. Be your own man.

He even tried to give us rules, which, as Abby said, weren’t his to make.

Rule #70 was “Keep digging until you hit bottom.” That’s…a lot of digging. Or not a lot of digging depending on how shallow your hole is supposed to be.

What he meant was don’t stop until you have answers. THAT is easily understood and the metaphor isn’t convoluted. Try that next time, McGee.

The case this week was altogether too easy to determine. We could see that the Captain did it as clearly as Gibbs could see that dead pirate body floating in the water 60 nautical miles away.

Make it harder next time, writers. Give us something that surprises us. This isn’t Bones.
