The freaks of American Horror Story: Freak Show are a superstitious lot. That’s what we learned on American Horror Story Season 4 Episode 3.

The legend of Edward Mordrake, and that evil second face of his, is enough to scare anyone, I suppose.

Since Halloween is drawing nigh in the real world, it makes sense that American Horror Story would cover the holiday. Superstitions surrounding the night when the freaks roam freely were the driving force behind the episode.

It’s a rule that freaks don’t perform on Halloween, lest they summon the spirit of Edward Mordrake and cause death to circulate their camp.

Thanks to Bette and Dot Tattler being new to the world of freak shows, we were all able to learn just what the legend of Mordrake entails. And learning that legend was a sure sign that his spirit would be summoned.

It’s TV 101. If someone says absolutely do not do this, that thing is absolutely going to be done.

Despite knowing the risk, and feigning disbelief in the superstition, Elsa sang on the stage, thanks in part to the fake fortune telling given to her by Mystic Miss Esmerelda. The other reason she sang was straight up ego. The woman’s ego is the size of Texas.

Now one of her freaks will have to die. But it won’t be Ethel. At least not at the hands of Mordrake.

Ethel IS dying, but of cirrhosis. She doesn’t want Jimmy to know and she’s hoping to speed the process along by picking up the booze again, despite her doctors orders to refrain from drinking in all cases. (See? TV 101.)

Before she goes she needs to make sure Jimmy Darling, her only son, is cared for, so she goes to the one man who should’ve been caring for him for his entire life: Dell, the strong man asshole who physically assaulted the kid last week.

Not so sure that was the right call there, Ethel, but okay.

What will happen when Jimmy finds out that Dell is his pa? That’s definitely going to happen since Ethel doesn’t want Jimmy to know. Will Jimmy snap (again) and kill his father? I can’t see a situation in which Dell suddenly becomes a good and loving dad, but that might be the freakier option.

Finally, there’s the issue of the clown and Dandy Mott. He’s A FAAAAHHHREEEAAAAK! And such a monster. He’s entitled and has a temper and psychological issues and holy hell is his story enraging and intriguing.

He’s the reason people watch American Horror Story online right now. I really thought he might kill Dora, the maid, but that wouldn’t really fit with his profile. He’s going to prey on weak people, if Twisty the Clown doesn’t kill him for getting in the way, that is.

We’ll see.
