Evangelist Tony Alamo was sentenced to 175 years in prison on ten counts of taking underage girls across state lines for sex. U.S. District Judge Harry Barnes gave Alamo the maximum sentence in Texarkana, Arkansas on Friday.
Several of the victims were in the courtroom for the sentencing. One woman, who was just 8-years-old at the time Alamo took her as a “child bride”, addressed Alamo in court and said, “You preyed on innocent children. You have the audacity to ask for mercy. What mercy did you show us? What kind of man of God does what you have done? Maybe the real God, not the god you made up, will have mercy on your soul.”
Alamo and his wife were the founders of Tony Alamo Christian Ministries. The facility was raided by federal and state investigative agents in September 2008 after a number of victims came forward to report physical and sexual abuse, polygamy and underage marriage dating as far back as 1994.
On July 24, 2009 Alamo was convicted of interstate transportation of minors for illegal sexual purposes, rape, sexual assault and contributing to the delinquency of minors. He was sentenced on November 13, 2009 to 175 years in prison.
