In 2009 country singer Taylor Swift, 20, collaborated with singer and songwriter John Mayer, 33, on the song Half of My Heart. Nineteen at the time, nobody really spent too much time thinking that the two might possibly be an item.
Now she has a new album Speak Now set to release on October 25. It features the single Dear John – reportedly a nod to Mayer.
Swift admits: “A lot of times when people’s relationships end, they write an e-mail to that person and say everything that they wish they would have said. A lot of times they don’t push send. This was a tough one to write and I guess putting it on the album was pushing send.”
The song lyrics:
Dear John
I see it all now that your gone
Don’t you think I am to young
To be messes with
The girl in the dress
Cried the whole way home
I should’ve known.
It was wrong
Don’t you think nineteen’s too young
To be played
By your dark, twisted games
When I loved you so.
My mother accused me of losing my mind
But I swore I was fine
You’ll add me to your long list of traitors
Who don’t understand
And I’ll look back in regret
I ignored what they said ‘Run as fast as you can.’
Swift has said that all of the songs that she writes are very clear and are “road maps” of her relationships. Last week Swift released Back To December, another single from the new album, this one about former boyfriend Taylor Lautner — those lyrics here.
UPDATE Oct. 25: Taylor Swift and Jake Gyllenhaal spent the weekend together in NYC.
