Joran van der Sloot, who has been the prime suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway five years ago, was arrested Thursday in Chile for the murder of a young woman in Peru.

He was also charged Thursday afternoon with extortion and wire fraud by the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama.

The complaint, filed in federal court in Birmingham, claims van der Sloot promised information on Natalee Holloway’s whereabouts in exchange for $250,000. It also states that in May 2010 Joran promised to describe the circumstances of Holloway’s death in return for the money. According to a sworn statement, van der Sloot received a partial payment of $15,000 wired to a Netherlands bank soon after.

Van der Sloot was captured and is being detained in Chile. He will be extradited to Peru to face charges in the murder of 21-year-old Stephany Flores Ramirez, whose bludgeoned body was found in his hotel room.
