Joran van der Sloot, on the run from Peruvian authorities, was captured near Santiago, Chile on Thursday and is being detained. It will take up to five days before he can be extradited to Peru, where he is the prime suspect in the May 30, 2010 slaying of Stephany Flores Ramirez.
The Dutch suspect was in Peru for a poker tournament, according to Peruvian police chief Gen. Cesar Guardia. Ramirez is also an avid poker player and that is reportedly how they initially met.
The 21-year-old woman was found dead in van der Sloot’s hotel room, bludgeoned with trauma to her head, neck, torso and back.
