Comedian Jerry Lewis was the 2009 recipient of the Jean Hersholt Award. The presentation took place during the 81st Annual Academy Awards. Introducing the funnyman was Eddie Murphy.
The award is given periodically for outstanding contributions to humanitarian causes. Lewis was cited for his telethon work that has helped to raise millions for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Lewis has been in poor health for the past decade but looked quite well on stage at the Kodak Theater. He has suffered from prostate cancer, ALS, diabetes and pulmonary fibrosis.
