Despite their divorce, Guy Ritchie is sticking up for Madonna and her quest to adopt a second child from Malawi. While married, the couple adopted David Banda.

The little girl that Madge is trying to adopt is nearly 4 year old Mercy James. Malawi officials turned down the singer’s application because Madonna hasn’t been a resident of the country for 18 to 24 months. Obviously that rule was not being enforced when Banda was adopted. An appeal has been filed by the singer’s legal team.

The film director said that Madge is a “great mum.” Ritchie released a statement through his rep.

“I fully support Madonna in her decision to apply for this adoption, and I am saddened that her application had been rejected. She is motivated only by being a caring person who seeks to share some of the advantages and opportunities that her life has given her.”

Seems to be a nice gesture on Ritchie’s part. He added that, “Madonna is a fantastic mother who cares deeply about her own children, and children who may need additional help and support.” Although it didn’t work this time, he say’s that there will be other opportunities for Madonna.

ET is reporting that Madonna and her family departed Malawi on a private jet Sunday morning. They have opted not to say in the country during the appeals process.
