David Lance Arneson, co-creator of gaming phenomenon Dungeons and Dragons, has died at the age of 61, after a long battle with cancer.

Dave Arneson, along with Gary Gygax – who passed away in March of last year, created the popular role-playing game in 1974.

Arneson, a driving force behind Dungeon and Dragons, filed multiple lawsuits against Gygax over not being given proper credit and royalties. The matter was later resolved out of court.

Arneson was inducted into the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts and Design’s Hall of Fame in 1984, and was named by Pyramid magazine as one of the Millenium’s Most Influential Persons in 1999.

A memorial service is planned at Bradshaw Funeral Home in St. Paul, MN, on April 20th.
