Cleveland Indians catcher Carlos Santana suffered a brutal knee injury after a collision with Red Sox outfielder Ryan Kalish.
Kalish was trying to score in the bottom of the seventh inning when he plowed into Santana at home plate. The rookie catcher was hit so hard he was knocked out of his left baseball spike. His left knee was injured, and he had to be carried off the field at Fenway Park wearing an orange air cast.
While many speculated that the injury could keep Santana out of play for the rest of the season, Indian’s manager Manny Acta said preliminary tests look good and trainers don’t feel he sustained any serious damage.
Santana is expected to return to Cleveland today for an MRI. “Right now we’re calling it a knee contusion. Once the MRI comes out we’ll have more,” says Acta.
