George W. Bush is in Baghdad today, a trip that has been closely guarded in secrecy. He was participating in a news conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki when an angry reporter removed his shoes and sent them sailing at the President of the United States.
The leather weapons were flung at the podium, directly at Bush, who ducked and was able to remain unscathed. A thud was heard as they hit the wall. Bush joked afterward by saying, “All I can report is a size 10.”
The protester shouted, “This is the end!” as he hurled the shoe missiles in the direction of the American commander in chief. He has been identified as Muntadar al-Zeidi, a correspondent for an Iraqi television station based in Cairo, Egypt.
White House Press Secretary Dana Perino suffered a black eye in the scuffle with the assailant. She had a microphone jabbed into her eye.
