Philanthropist Brooke Astor‘s 85-year-old son Anthony Dryden Marshall was convicted Thursday of fraud, wrapping up a 6 month trial on charges involving the exploitation of his elderly mother and her $200 million estate. She died at age 105 in 2007.
Marshall was found guilty, after 12 days of deliberation, of bilking his late mother out of millions, and changing her will while the New York City socialite was incompetent and suffering from Alzheimer’s in her final years.
A Manhattan jury convicted Astor’s son in 14 of 16 counts, including first degree grand larceny and scheming to defraud. Marshall faces a maximum sentence of 25 years behind bars. He was acquitted on charges of falsifying business records.
Over 70 witnesses were called by the prosecution, including Henry Kissinger, Graydon Carter, Barbara Walters, and Annette de la Renta.
Co-defendant, estate lawyer Francis X. Morrissey Jr., was convicted of five counts, including scheming to defraud, conspiracy and forgery and faces 7 years in prison.
Both will remain free on $100,000 bail until their sentencing on December 8.
