Hugh Jackman will not star on Broadway in the stage production of ‘Houdini,’ after walking away from the project earlier this week.
The Tony award-winning Aussie actor issued this statement, “I have greatly enjoyed the collaborative process on ‘Houdini.’ Ultimately, though, I wasn’t able to commit to the time this role will require.”
He added, “I have tremendous respect and admiration for the creative team and I wish everyone the best. I know they’re well on their way to making things extraordinary.”
Jackman,45, signed on when it was announced that Oscar and Emmy winning writer Aaron Sorkin would be penning the script. It seems the ‘Social Network’ and ‘West Wing’ celeb wasn’t feeling it either and withdrew from the project, also citing scheduling conflicts.
Lead producer Scott Sanders responded, “Hugh has been terrific to have on this part of the journey. We will continue to move forward with our remarkable creative team, as they craft this ambitious new musical.”
Hugh picked up his first Tony in 2004 for ‘The Boy from Oz.’ He received another in 2012, this one a Special Award for Extraordinary Contributions to the Theatre Community.
‘Houdini’ is slated to hit Broadway in 2014.
