Actress Maria Bello wrote a piece for the New York Times entitled ‘Coming Out as a Modern Family,’ detailing her long-term relationship with a woman she refers to as Clare.

The 46-year-old decided it was time to reveal her romantic involvement after her 12-year-old son Jackson began raising some tough questions about his mother’s best friend — who also happens to be his godmother.

He said after learning the truth, “ Mom, love is love, whatever you are.” She responded, “But Jack, I’m a little scared. When I was younger, people judged you if you were in a romantic relationship with a person of the same sex, and some still do. So I’m not sure how to deal with this. But we’ll figure it out together.”

Jack’s father is TV executive Dan McDermott. Maria remarked, “Jack’s father, Dan, will always be my partner because we share Jack. Dan is the best father and the most wonderful man I’ve known.”

Maria stated emphatically, “Whomever I love, however I love them, whether they sleep in my bed or not, or whether I do homework with them or share a child with them, love is love. And I love our modern family.”

She posted this pic on Twitter that was captioned, “Giving thanks for my modern family. Happy Thanksgiving for whatever kind of family you have.”

Her long list of recent movie credits include these 2013 films: ‘Grown Ups 2,’ ‘Prisoners,’ ‘Third Person.’ She will appears in three more in 2014: ‘Strings,’ ‘Demonic’ and ‘McFarland.’
