It has been a great summer for actress Kerry Washington! Last month she secretly married San Francisco 49ers Nnamdi Asomugha and yesterday she received her first Emmy nomination for ‘Scandal.’

Washington, 35, plays crisis manager Olivia Pope on the ABC political thriller.

She told PEOPLE, “I’m the luckiest broad in showbiz. I just feel really blessed and humbled and grateful for this nomination.”

She received the big news at an airport in Northern California so there was no time for kick up her heels. “I had my dog with me and I was trying to get water for the plane in that hurried, crazy airport mode. I’m going to celebrate with my Scandal family after we have our table read today.”

The award show is slated for Sept. 22. Will she be on the arm of her NFL player husband? That seems unlikely since the 49ers have a game against the Indianapolis Colts at Candlestick Park in San Francisco that day.

She mused, “I have not decided who will be my date. That was my parents’ question this morning! We’ll see.”

Washington admits, “I don’t talk about my personal life in the press, but I will say I’m really happy. I’m blessed in all areas of my life.”
