Christy Martin, the best known female boxer who once fought on the undercard for Mike Tyson, was stabbed and shot last night in her Florida home according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

The 42-year-old was able to stumble out of her home at 6:45 p.m. and waved down a passing motorist who transported her to Florida Hospital North.  She is being treated for wounds to her torso and left leg.

Christy told police that it was her 66-year-old husband and boxing trainer James Martin who pulled the trigger and wielded the knife.  He was reportedly distraught about the relationship with his wife and was suicidal.

Officers had responded to an earlier call to the residence but determined that Jim Martin did not appear to be drunk, suicidal or despondent.  Six hours later he attacked his wife.

Officers are still on the hunt for her assailant, who is described as 5 foot 10 inches, 165-pounds, bald white man with brown eyes.

Christy's former promoter was Don King.  In 1996 she was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated.  The article was titled 'The Lady is a CHAMP'.  Recently she and her husband have been operating a boxing gym in Apopka where they train local amateur boxers.
