The family and teammates of Chicago Bears defensive end Gaines Adams are shocked and saddened by the ballplayer’s sudden death on Sunday morning, January 17, 2010.
The 26-year-old was rushed to South Regional Hospital in Greenwood, S.C. where he was pronounced dead at 9:00 a.m.. Coroner James T. Coursey has indicated that the preliminary autopsy findings point to cardiac arrest caused by an enlarged heart. Full toxicology results will not be available for two months.
Adams joined the Bears in October 2009, after playing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers since 2007. In 10 starts in Chicago, he had seven combined tackles, one pass deflection and one forced fumble.
The Chicago Bears released a statement to the media; “We are stunned and saddened by the news of Gaines’ passing. Our players are with his family at this difficult time.”
