alexa ray joel drug overdose in suicide attempt

Alexa Ray Joel, 23-year-old daughter of Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley, was rushed to St. Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan on Saturday for a possible drug overdose.  It has been reported that she managed to convey to paramedics that she had taken eight pills and was having trouble breathing.

A woman who is believed to be Alexa Ray's roommate called 911 shortly before 12:30 p.m. to summon help to their West Village apartment, telling the operator that the stricken woman had taken pills and wanted to die.  The New York Post is reporting that police believe the situation was a suicide attempt.

The young woman's rep Claire Mercuri said, "She was admitted and doctors are assessing her needs.  She is stable and that is all we will say at the moment."

According to her MySpace page and her Facebook page, Alexa Ray was scheduled to appear on December 10, 2009 for two free concerts during the NYSE Euronext Holiday Tree Lighting.

Update:  Monday, December 7:  Alexa Ray Joel has been released from the hospital and is with her father Billy Joel.  It was reported by People magazine that she was distraught over an argument with her boyfriend, rocker Jimmy Riot, and took a significant number of Traumeel tablets, a homeopathic medication.
