Carrie Prejean enraged many last night during the Miss USA 2009 pageant, including the co-director of the Miss California competition, with the way she answered her question regarding same sex marriage. Judge Perez Hilton asked the question: “Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalize same-sex marriage. Do you think every state should follow suit? Why or why not? ” Miss California responded to the question by saying, “I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that’s how I was raised.”
Prejean, who says she feels like she won, stands by her answer but acknowledges that her beliefs likely cost her the crown. Miss USA 2009 went to Kristen Dalton – see photos here.
Keith Lewis and Shanna Moakler, who direct the Miss California pageant organization, were both vocal about their displeasure with Prejean’s comments. Lewis said, “I am personally….hurt that Miss California believes marriage rights belong only to a man and a woman. Moakler said that she fully supports Lewis’ condemnation of Miss California 2009. In breaking news on Tuesday, May 13, 2009, Moakler, who was Miss USA 1995, has stepped down as pageant director.
Hilton was livid after hearing Prejean’s response to HIS question. He recorded a video response to Miss California immediately after the pageant ended, using some offensive language – video #2 below. He has since softened his stance and discussed the subject at length in the #3 video below.
