Chris Matthews was caught uttering “Oh God” on a live mic as Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal walked out to rebut President Obama‘s speech last night.

No one was sure who made the off-camera comment when it aired live Tuesday night, and the Huffington Post asked readers to guess who they believed it was. 32% thought it was Matthews, while 35% said co-anchor Keith Olbermann, 18% said a producer and 15% thought it was a camera operator.

The MSNBC Hardball host insists he wasn’t referring to Jindal himself, or anything he expected the governor to say. He says he was “taken aback by that peculiar stagecraft, the walking from somewhere in the back of this narrow hall, the winding staircase looming there, the odd antibellum look of the scene,” in a statement he delivered on Wednesday evening’s show. “Was this some mimicking of a president walking along the state floor to the East Room?”

Jindal declined an invitation to appear on Hardball.
