Kara Goucher, 30, middle and long distance runner who ran in the 10,000m and 5,000m finals at the Beijing Olympics, competed in her first marathon today in New York City. The talented athlete finished the women’s race in third spot, becoming the first American woman on the podium since 1994, when Anne Marie Letko took third.
A field of 39,000 runners competed in the event, weeded down from 100,000 applicants. They were vying for cash prizes totaling $600,000.
Born in New York, Kara moved in her childhood to Duluth, Minnesota with her mother and sisters after her father was killed in a car accident. She now resides in Portland, Oregon with her husband and fellow runner Adam Goucher.
