This is the official “Violet Hill” video from Coldplay’s highly anticipated fourth album, “Viva la Vida,” not to be confused with Ricky Martin’s “Livin’ la Vida Loca.”
Aware of the inevitable link, frontman Chris Martin explains, “Everyone thinks it comes from Ricky Martin, which is fine. I have absolute respect. I’ve been through this before, naming something or someone and everyone saying that ‘That’s a terrible name’. But then saying, ‘Well, fuck you, that’s what it’s called, and I’ll be proved to be right eventually’. So when Viva la Vida came along, I was kind of annoyed because I’m going to have to try and convince everybody of this, but it just felt right.”
The name, which translates in English to “Long Live Life,” was inspired by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, who was portrayed in the 2002 film “Frida” by Salma Hayeck, which chronicled her life of pain after being diagnosed with polio and her tempestuous marriage.
“She went through a lot of shit, of course, and then she started a big painting in her house that said ‘Viva la Vida,'” Martin explained. “I just loved the boldness of it.”
31-year-old Martin is married to actress Gwyneth Paltrow. The couple have two children, Apple, age 4, and Moses, age 2. Other member of the band include Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion.
“Viva la Vida” hits stores on June 17th.
