Donda West, 58, mother of rapper Kanye West, died Saturday night in Los Angeles. She had apparently undergone a cosmetic procedure. An autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday.
Kanye West often spoke of the close relationship he had with his mother. She was his frequent companion at awards shows and parties.
The rappers mother had worked in the academic field for 31 years and ended her career as chairwoman of Chicago State University’s English department in 2004 in order to assist her son with his business dealings.
At the time of her death, Donda served as chief executive of West Brands LLC, the parent company of Kanye West’s business enterprises and was chairwomen of the Kanye West Foundation – an educational nonprofit organization whose goal is to improve dropout rates and increase literacy.
The rappers mother also penned a book that was release in May of this year entitled “Raising Kanye: Life Lessons From the Mother of a Hip-Hop Star”.
