Fairfax High School in Hollywood, California chose Sergio Garcia, instead of one of the female contenders, to be their 2009 prom queen. The openly gay 18 year old senior wanted to be part of his senior class prom court and felt that running for prom queen would better suit his personality than vying for prom king.
He first approached the task as a stunt and wasn’t sure school officials would allow him to participate. He ran against several female students and much to his surprise, the campaign opened up dialogue about gender roles on campus.
Each contender had to address the senior class student body with a short speech. Garcia tried to persuade his classmates to chose him for prom queen by telling them:
“At one time, prom may have been a big popularity contest where the best-looking guy or girl were crowned king and queen. Things have changed and it’s no longer just about who has the most friends or who wears the coolest clothes. Sure, I’m not your typical prom queen candidate. There’s more to me than meets the eye.”
Garcia assured his senior class members that if elected, he wouldn’t be wearing a dress. “I will be wearing a suit, but don’t be fooled, deep down inside, I am a queen!”
His classmates took his words to heart and cast their votes for Garcia. He is the reigning prom queen of Fairfax H.S., after being crowned at Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel on Saturday night.
