Ranee Sue Proper, 42, was sentenced on Wednesday to one count of criminal sexual conduct second degree by Judge Edward Sosnick of the 6th Circuit Court in Pontiac, Michigan. The former Holly H.S. music teacher was forced to resign in May, 2008, after she was arrested for initiating sex with two of her students, age 16 and 17.
Proper got five years probation and must serve a nine month sentence at Oakland County Jail. Her name and address will also appear in the Michigan Sex Offender Registry. She will be required to take part in a sex offender mental health program and will be barred from having unsupervised contact with anyone under the age of 18, except for her own children.
The Holly, Michigan woman was initially arraigned on five counts of third degree criminal sexual contact, after several parents came forward with allegations that their son’s had participated in sex acts with their teacher at her home and at Holly High School. A plea bargain was arranged last month, and four of the charges were dropped in exchange for an admission of guilt on one count of criminal sexual conduct second degree.
Proper’s husband Tom Proper and their children have continued to support her, according to Proper’s attorney Raymond Correll. He told the court that “she has significant remorse and feels very badly about what happened.”
Judge Sosnick told Proper, “The best way for you to move on is to throw yourself into the counseling and begin to understand why it happened in the first place.”
