Baseball fans across the country are calling for Bud Selig to overturn umpire Jim Joyce‘s blown call last night and award Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga his perfect game.
With 2 outs in the 9th inning versus the Indians, Galarraga was just one pitch away from the game of his life when fate took over and robbed him in the most bizarre of calls.
Joyce was working first base Wednesday night in Detroit. Miguel Cabrera threw to Galarraga while covering first base on a grounder by Jason Donald for the 27th out. Cabrera celebrated…until he heard Joyce call the runner safe.
Joyce was immediately remorseful after reviewing the call on tape. He said, “It was the biggest call of my career, and I kicked the s*it out of it. I just cost that kid a perfect game.” He also apologized to Galarraga personally.
Instant replay would have resolved the dilemma quickly. Oh…right, not an option.
Ok Bud – do the right thing and give Armando his perfect game!
