L’Oreal’s latest Maybelline and Lancome brand ad campaign photos featuring actress Julia Roberts and supermodel Christy Turlington have been banned in Britain because they are airbrushed.
According to Britain’s Advertising Standards Agency, Roberts and Turlington, though beautiful in their own right, have been digitally manipulated by the cosmetic giant in order to dupe consumers into thinking they too will achieve perfection with the eraser product or the anti-aging foundation.
L’Oreal was quick to point out that the Mario Testino image of Roberts was “an aspirational picture.” When the ASA asked to compare it against the original photograph before enhancements, they were “shocked” to be told they would not be permitted to view it.
The watchdog agency ruled that the magazine ads were misleading, and exaggerated the ability of the products they were promoting to cover lines, wrinkles and blemishes.
