Jani Lane, former lead vocalist and songwriter for the glam metal band Warrant, was found dead at a Comfort Inn hotel in Woodland Hills, California on Thursday, August 11. He is best known for writing and performing Cherry Pie in 1989.

The 47-year-old was born in Akron, Ohio. His parents named him John Kennedy Oswald, a nod to an assassinated president and the man who gunned him down in Dallas several months before the rocker was born.

Lane left Warrant in 2004 due to personal and business disagreements. He returned in 2008 but the reconciliation lasted only eight months before he split again, citing “too much water under the bridge.”

The musician was featured in 2005 on VH1’s Celebrity Fit Club 2.

A death investigation to determine cause of death will include an autopsy and toxicology testing.
