Project Runway: First rule of winning: Don’t piss off the judge
We know it’s a little late, but last week was so full of crack, cross-dressing, and pole dancing, that we couldn’t take ourselves away from Lindsay Lohan long enough to whip Intern Molly into shape. Now that we are totally geared up for this week’s Project Runway, however, we realize we still need to bring you the recap of last week’s episode.
Yes, while when you were too busy having some sort of life on Wednesday nights, Molly was glued to Bravo, watching closely and bringing us the play-by-play.
From Satino’s craziness to great cat-fightage between Zulema and Kara, Bannana Republic pairs up with Heidi Klum to bring us some extra preppy fun. The competitors designing in pairs was the worst idea ever, but made for great reality TV. Molly’s full recap, insider gossip, Michael Kors offenders and all … after the jump.
Santino entered this episode fairly convinced that he would design everything any Hilton ever wore again (which, at this point, isn’t saying much). Unfortunately, he still has a few more hoops to jump through to get to that point. Plus, this competition’s main sponsor is the slightly less glamorous Banana Republic.
Banana Republic is, of course, a huge part of the whole Project Runway competition, and, interestingly, the BR mentorship part of the winnings are why Jay McCarroll didn’t accept any of the prizes when he won the first season.
This week, the designers had to create something that could be worn, with slight moderation, both daytime and nighttime. Complicated? Sure, and made worse by the fact that the competitors also have to design in pairs and the losing two are both “Auf Weidershened”.
The pairing was awkward at best — Nick mostly wished he wasn’t with Santino the bi-polar wonder, while Zulema and Kara practically tried to rip each others’ heads off. And when Diana and Marla paired together it was almost as if they were trying to lose. So yes, the episode was predictable, but the real drama is who else had to bear the criticism.
In the construction phase, everyone was using the navy charmeuse, but each team found a way to make their own problems out of it. Diana suggested having both zipper and buttons on the same side, but Marla had a wit of sense to deny that really dumb idea. Nick had to “tame the beast’ that is Santino’s love affair with frills, while across the room, Zulema made Kara cry. And the sobbing continued through the whole episode, which was hilarious.
Daniel V. and Andrae had the best design early on. Though almost every team is working with the dress/blazer combo, theirs was the most adorable. Tim Gunn loved their “No, I’m not going home with you???????(remove blazer), but I will let you buy me a drink” mantra.
At the end of day one, Santino, wanting to show the world what a renaissance bisexual he really is, improvised a song and dance number reminding Andrae to “Lighten up it’s just fashion”.
As if the contestants weren’t flipping enough over the challenge, Tim Gunn came out with a doozy????????the teams would also have to make window displays for their outfit, which were judged by the public and play an integral role in the elimination.
The windows, an elementary school-style construction paper human diorama, were mostly boring. Daniel V. and Andrae’s creation was by far the best — one has to wonder if Santino and Nick even tried. In the most bizarre act, Diana and Marla spent hours pissing off Leonardo DiCaprio by crumpling up pieces of paper for no reason.
Daniel V. and Andrae win the competition, which means their outfit will be available at some Banana Republic locations. Sharing the bottom with Marla and Diana, however, are Nick and Santino.
Santino, quickly developing an unpleasant relationship with Michael Kors (nice strategy, buddy, way to ruin your interactions with one of the three main judges), exclaimed that all the women that he knows love Banana Republic and have never heard of Michael Kors. Kors chuckled to himself, made sure everyone knew that he actually knows gallery owners, and wished that Marla and Diana weren’t such fuck-ups so that he could kick of Santino instead.
Of course Marla and Diana were out, which is for the best since they don’t really have any clue what they are doing. I’m shocked they were even able to put together a dress at all. Zipper and buttons on the same side of a dress? How does that even work?
Molly’s predictions for the top three finalist are Daniel V., Nick, and Chloe. Emmett is surely done next, but Santino will get the Kors boot before the final episode, for sure. Stay tuned for Thursday, when Molly brings us her sure to be thrilling recap of the most important TV show in history, Project Runway.
