‘NYTBR’ implementing design, editorial changes

After all the rumors surrounding what the revamped New York Times Book Review will look like, Publishers Weekly storms in and spoils the surprise with a roundup of the changes. The press release says the redesigned pages will give “more attention to commercial fiction, mysteries and romance novels,” provide letters with more space and expand the bestsellers list.
It’s all in an attempt to make the NYTBR more magazine-like, which “means an interspersal of bookish features amid the reviews, an undeniably consumer-friendly tweak.” Gone are the boring illustrations, in are author photos. Gone is “‘New and Noteworthy Paperbacks,” in is “Paperback Row” – same thing, new name. And new to the NYTBR, at least this issue, is a listing of book blogs, providing a terribly unnecessary excuse to ditch the publication we were trying to read and replace it with a medium our employers won’t notice we’re wasting away the day with.
