To paraphrase a Beatles classic: the second week in a row of John Lennon/Paul McCartney songs on American Idol was A Hard Day’s Night for the final 11 contestants.

Only one received an outpouring of support from all three judges. Can you guess who it was?

That’s right, to sum up Simon, Paula and Randy, David Archuleta brought the hotness, while singing an amazing version of “The Long and Winding Road” that was a master class for everyone else. Fairly high praise.

As for the other typically consistent performers, here’s a review of their less-than-perfect performances:

  • Away from her piano, Brooke White appeared uncomfortable. We did smile that she wore yellow while singing “Here Comes the Sun,” but she admitted afterwards that she was an awkward mover.
  • Simply put, Simon said Michael Johns‘ take on “A Day in the Life” was a complete mess. The Aussie missed notes, while Randy said it wasn’t one of his good ones. Baby.
  • We actually liked Carly Smithson and her version of “Blackbird,” but Simon labeled it was “indulgent.” Kinda weird. Paula said Carly should earn a capital F for Fantastic.
  • Jason Castro was adorable as always, but maybe he can blame the French lyrics for not really seeming connected to the song.

The funniest moment of the night was brought to us by Kristy Lee Cook. After another lowly performance, she – seemingly to Simon, seemingly out of nowhere – announced she could “blow you out of your socks off, and you know it!”

While Ryan blushed and Randy begged him not to follow up on that, we wondered if Kristy drew motivation from Antonella Barba.
